      • Conventional gaming or amusement with prizes machines, generally known as fruit machines, require coins or tokens of various denominations to be inserted in order to release the machine for playing. Further, winning events require coins or tokens to be dispensed. Thus, a conventional fruit machine has within its construction two separate components for handling the coins or tokens, namely payout tubes or hoppers and a cash box.

On commissioning a machine for play, the payout tubes or hoppers are manually filled to a predetermined level and, during subsequent playing of the machine, coins inserted for play are automatically fed into the payout tubes or hoppers. Whenever the tubes or hoppers are filled, the coins are diverted into the cash box, where they remain until such time as they are removed manually from the machine for banking purposes.

Within the fruit machine or vending industry, it is common practice to locate a change machine in the proximity of one or more fruit machines or vending machines so as to stimulate use of such machines by making available coins or tokens of the correct denominations for operating the machines. Conventional change machines provide change for bank notes or coins, exchange tokens for money, or exchange money for tokens. Such machines are usually manually filled with coins or tokens of predetermined values, which are then dispensed when a bank note or a coin of a higher predetermined value is inserted into the machine. Money inserted into such a machine is directed to a cash box, which is emptied for banking purposes from time to time, for instance when the manually filled reserves within the machine are exhausted.

At any time during operation of a fruit machine, its cash box contains a quantity of money which is inactive until such time as it is removed and placed in circulation again.

Within an organisation operating large quantities of such fruit machines, this inactive money can amount to a large sum and is, therefore, undesirable. Removal of this inactive money for banking purposes is labour intensive and the weight of collected money is substantial. Similarly, change machines are labour intensive and do not within themselves generate any profit. Large sums of money are cycled within such machines, which require manual refilling when the reserves have been exhausted.

According to the invention, there is provided a token operated machine, comprising:first means for recieving a token of at least one first predetermined value;first means for dispensing a plurality of tokens of at least one second predetermined value in response to receipt by the first receiving means, the total value of the dispensed tokens being equal to the value of the received token;second means for receiving a token of the at least one second predetermined value;release means operated by receipt of at least one token by the second receiving means; andmeans for returning tokens received by the second receiving means to the first dispensing means.

The apparatus may comprise at least one further second receiving means, at least one further release means, and at least one further returning means.

The release means may comprise means for supplying or dispensing goods. The release means may alternatively comprise an amusement with prizes machine, preferably of the type including further means for dispensing tokens as prizes with the returning means arranged to supply tokens received by the second receiving means to the further dispensing means and to return tokens to the first dispensing means when the further dispensing means is full. Alternatively, the first dispensing means may be arranged to dispense tokens as prizes.

The invention will be further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, which is a schematic diagram of a fruit machine constituting a preferred embodiment of the invention.

The fruit machine shown in the drawing comprises a change machine mechanism 1 associated with two fruit machine mechanisms 2 and 3. The change machine mechanism 1 could be associated with a single fruit machine mechanism or with more than two such mechanisms.

The change machine mechanism comprises a 5 note validator 4 and a 10 note validator 5. As is known, these validators are arranged to receive a bank note and to provide a release signal when such a note is recognised as being genuine and of the correct denomination. These release signals are supplied to a coin dispenser 6 which has coin hoppers or payout tubes 7, 8, and 9 for storing 1, 50p, and 10p coins. When released by one of the validators 4 and 5, the coin dispenser dispenses coins of the appropriate value via a chute 10 to an outlet tray 11.

Each of the fruit machine mechanisms 2, 3 comprises a coin mechanism 12 with inlet chutes 13, 14, and 15 which supply 1, 50p, and 10p coins from one or more slots in a front panel of the machine to the dispenser 12. Upon receiving a predetermined amount of money, the coin mechanism 12 supplies a release signal to a gaming mechanism 16 for instance of the conventional fruit machine type.

Coins from the mechanism 12 pass through a chute 17 into a sorter 18 where they are sorted into denominations and supplied to hoppers or payout tubes 19, 20, and 21. Alternatively, three chutes of the type shown at 17 may be provided so as to keep separate the coins of three denominations. In either case, the sorter 18 is also arranged to divert coins to a sorter 22 via a chute 23 when a hopper is full.

The gaming mechanism 16 supplies a win signal to a coin dispenser 24 which dispenses a prize of the appropriate value by passing coins from the hoppers 19, 20, and 21 via a chute 25 to an outlet 26.

The sorter 22 sorts the coins from the or each fruit machine mechanism 2, 3 into appropriate denominations and supplies these to the hoppers 7 to 9. Alternatively, the chute 23 may be replaced by three chutes for the respective denominations. In either case, the sorter 22 diverts coins to a cash box 27 when a hopper is full. The cash box 27 also receives validated bank notes from the validators 4 and 5 via the chutes 28 and 29.

In order to commission the apparatus, the hoppers 7 to 9 and 19 to 21 are provided with a predetermined quantity of coins of the appropriate denominations. Similarly, these hoppers are checked whenever the cash box 27 is emptied.

Each fruit machine mechanism is released by inserting coins to a predetermined value, which coins are used to fill the hoppers 19 to 21. From time to time, the gaming mechanism 16 will signal a win to the coin dispenser 24 so that coins from the hoppers 19 to 21 are dispensed to the outlet 26 as a prize. However, the nature of the gaming mechanism 16 is such that the value of coins received exceeds the value of coins paid out as prizes, so that the hoppers 19 to 21 become filled and additional coins are diverted by the sorter 18 to the sorter 22 of the change machine mechanism 1.

The coins received by the sorter 22 are used to fill the hoppers 7 to 9. Whenever any of the hoppers is full, further coins of the corresponding denomination are diverted into the cash box 27 to await removal for banking.

Punters may already be in possession of coins suitable for releasing the fruit machine mechanisms 2 and 3, in which case additional coins enter the apparatus and are either paid out as prizes, supplied to the hoppers 7 to 9, or supplied to the cash box 27. However, where such punters do not have the correct denominations of coins, change may be obtained by entering bank notes of the appropriate denominations into the validators 4 and 5.

These notes, if accepted, pass to the cash box 27 to await collection for banking and coins of the appropriate value are dispensed to the outlet 11. It is usual for at least some of such coins to be used with the fruit machine mechanisms 2, 3, so that these coins are ultimately paid out as prizes, returned to the hoppers 7 to 9, or supplied to the cash box 27.

Because of the supply of coins to the apparatus from punters who do not require change and the recirculation of coins through the apparatus, the need to replenish the supply of coins for prizes or for change is substantially reduced and may even be essentially eliminated. Also, the amount of inactive money is substantially reduced because the fruit machine mechanisms 2, 3 do not require cash boxes. Coins tend to be recirculated and only excess coins find their way to the single cash box 27 provided in the change machine mechanism 1. This and the use of bank note validators 4 and 5 in the change machine mechanism 1 reduces the weight of money which has to be collected from the apparatus for banking. Recirculation and fresh supply of coins reduces the frequency of emptying of the change machine mechanism 1, and may even eliminate this. The change machine mechanism may therefore remain in service for much longer periods than is the case with conventional independent change machines,Even if the change machine mechanism 1 goes out of service, the fruit machine mechanisms 2, 3 may continue to be used by punters with the correct denominations of coins so that the mechanisms 2, 3 are not affected.

It is possible to eliminate the sorter 18, the hoppers 19 to 21, and the coin dispenser 24; for instance when a single fruit machine mechanism 2 is associated with the change machine mechanism 1. In this case, coins from the mechanism 12 are supplied direct to the sorter 22 and signals from the gaming mechanism 16 control the coin dispenser 6 for paying out prizes. Also, where the gaming mechanism 16 is replaced by a vending mechanism so that the apparatus becomes a vending or dispensing machine, no prizes are given and the sorter 18, the coin dispenser 24, and the associated components may be eliminated with coins being supplied from the mechanism 12 to the sorter 22.
